Frequently Asked Questions

What does architecture have to do with cultivating microalgae?

Low-performing windows have a huge impact on energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. We are controlling microalgae cell density to ensure that the solar gain is regulated according to the season, thus reducing heating and cooling loads. The system helps create a better indoor environment by decreasing carbon dioxide levels and producing oxygen-rich air.

How does the system manage hot temperature and freeze protection?

The system uses air inside the room to capture carbon dioxide, enabling it to maintain acceptable temperature ranges for cultivating microalgae. In addition, the system can accommodate heat or cold-tolerant algae with salinity.

How often does the system harvest microalgae, and what do you do with the harvested microalgae?

Our current harvesting schedule is set to run every two weeks in order to make the effectiveness of maintenance and operation. The microalgae growth rate is mainly influenced by light, CO2 levels, and nutrients and the harvesting schedule can be adjusted based on user needs. Microalgae collected from the system are being used to create biofuel which works as a cleaner alternative to traditional transportation fuels to reduce carbon emissions.

How does the system mitigate legionella blooms?

The system incorporates UVC light at the inlet and outlet of the air chamber and any potential pathogens are treated before entering and exiting the system. This ensures a safe and healthy indoor environment.

How does the system ensure there is no water leakage?

The system is designed to ensure complete water tightness through innovative digital fabrication and state-of-the-art construction techniques. Additionally, anti-leak sensors give advance warnings and ensure the prevention of any potential water leakage.

How does the system manage biofouling?

Biofouling can be managed through the use of various techniques such as physical, chemical, or biological control measures. Our aeration system effectively removes biofouling.
